The Milwaukee Brewers are exploring a number of sites for a new spring-training home, and Peoria is on the list of cities under consideration in the greater Phoenix area.
That the Brewers have been exploring a spring-training move has been no secret; the team is landlocked at Maryvale Baseball Park and has been wooed by municipalities both in Arizona and Florida. A local report lists only Peoria as a possible destination for the team, but it suggests there are other cities in the Brewers’ aim. From Your West Valley:
A team spokesman would not confirm the number of locations being considered but indicated there are at least more than one.
“We are considering all options at this point. I am not prepared to say anything beyond that now,” said Tyler Barnes, the club’s vice president of communications in a phone message Tuesday….
Councilman Ben Toma said the site most likely to be considered lies within a 500-acre area in north Peoria off the Loop 303 freeway near Vistancia Boulevard and El Mirage Road.
It doesn’t sound like the Brewers are working on a project with another team, but you can bet at some point there will be discussion of this turning into a two-team complex; the economics are compelling. Also under consideration: Gila River Indian Community and Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation.
The Brewers currently train at Maryvale Baseball Park, the only MLB team left training in Phoenix proper. The team has been there since 1998.
