People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring. -- Rogers Hornsby

This is the last spring in Sarasota and Ed Smith Stadium for the Cincinnati Reds -- a short tenure, as the team moved there from Plant City in 1998. The Reds will play in 2010 and beyond at a spring complex in Goodyear, Arizona, shared with the Cleveland Indians. Ed Smith Stadium opened in March 1989 as the spring-training home of the Chicago White Sox, who have since shifted their spring-training home to Tucson Electric Park in Arizona. Ed Smith Stadium and the surrounding spring-training complex includes four-and-a-half practice fields and 35,000 square feet of clubhouses and office space.

During the regular season Ed Smith Stadium is home to the Sarasota Reds (Class A; Florida State League).

The Cincinnati Reds have trained in the following locations: Cincinnati (1901-1902); Augusta, Ga. (1903); Dallas (1904); Jacksonville (1905); San Antonio (1906); Marlin Springs, Texas (1907); St. Augustine (1908); Atlanta (1909); Hot Springs, Ark. (1910-1911); Columbus, Ga. (1912); Mobile, Ala. (1913); Alexandria, La. (1914-1915); Shreveport (1916-1917); Montgomery, Ala. (1918); Waxahachie, Texas (1919); Miami (1920); Cisco, Texas (1921); Mineral Wells, Texas (1922); Orlando (1923-1930); Tampa (1931-1942); Bloomington, Ind. (1943-1945); Tampa (1946-1987); Plant City, Fla. (1988-1997); Sarasota (1998-present).

Ed Smith Stadium opened in 1989 as the spring-training home of the Chicago White Sox. When the ChiSox moved spring operations to Arizona, the Reds moved to Ed Smith Stadium from Plant City in 1998.
