Diamondbacks narrow spring-training choices to three

The Arizona Diamondbacks say they've narrowed the choice for a new spring-training faciity to three in the greater Phoenix area, but they're not discussing specifics.

D-Backs chief executive Derrick Hall is letting out a few details, however. Two of the three sites are on tribal lands, which would indicate the Salt River Pima-Maricopa and Fort McDowell Yavapai communities are in the running. And all three proposals are for two-team complexes, which means the team is probably planning on a partnership with the Colorado Rockies. Both teams are looking to move from Tucson once a new complex is completed.

Reds looking at August move to new spring digs

The Cincinnati Reds are looking at a August move to their new spring-training digs in Goodyear, Arizona, as the team prepares for Cactus League play in 2010.

The new complex is next to the Cleveland Indians' training facility. The pair will share Goodyear Ballpark.

Lee County selects Waterman-Pinnacle development for BoSox spring-training site

Lee County Commissioners have selected a site close to Southwest Florida International Airport as the future home of a Boston Red Sox spring-training camp.

It was a site that was almost eliminated from consideration in the early going, both for its location -- the site is just barely within the target area for the camp -- and for the fact the owners are not willing to donate land to the county, an important early criteria for Lee County officials. That criteria has obviously fallen by the wayside, and the county will pay $22 million for the 203 acres of land. A big reason for choosing the land: it doesn't require additional permitting, allowing construction to begin immediately after the land is acquired and funding arranged by the county. The Red Sox and the county want the new facility open in spring 2011.

The parcel is located off Daniels Parkway, the main road east out of Fort Myers leading to Southwest Florida International Airport.

Orioles down to Fort Myers, Sarasota as future spring home

With multiple deadlines at play, the Baltimore Orioles appear close to making a decision about moving spring-training operations to Sarasota or Fort Myers.

In both situations, the team would play at an existing facility: Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota or City of Palms Park in Fort Myers. Ed Smith Stadium could be available to the Orioles as soon as 2010 now that the Reds have shifted spring operations to Arizona, while City of Palms Park would be available in 2012 once the Red Sox move to a new facility.

From what we hear, the Orioles are leaning toward City of Palms Park -- but no final decision is in place.

Cactus League attendance down 5 percent, despite new teams

The official numbers confirm what many in baseball have been saying: attendance is down 5 percent in Cactus League games this spring despite the full-time addition of the Indians and Dodgers to the mix.

That's a surprise: many expected the Cactus League to receive a boost from the move of Los Angeles and Cleveland from Florida and the move of the White Sox from Tucson to Phoenix.
