Cubs reject HoHoKam Park renovation, will seek new Mesa facility

Alas, poor HoHoKam, I knew thee well.

But not well enough to prevent Mesa and the Chicago Cubs from casting covetous eyes toward a new spring-training facility within the city. In past months Mesa officials had held out hope that the Cubs would be happy with additional renovations to HoHoKam Park, but apparently the new owners of the Cubs have indicated they'd prefer a new facility, as city officials return from meetings in Chicago and map out a strategy to keep the Cubs in Mesa.

Sarasota, Orioles pick Schwartz, Hoyt to design Ed Smith Stadium makeover

Washington's David M. Schwartz Architects and Sarasota's Hoyt Architects are the initial choices by the Baltimore Orioles and Janet Marie Smith to make over Sarasota's Ed Smith Stadium as the spring home of the Orioles.

Japanese teams pass on Tucson spring training

Because the Japanese professional season starts in mid-March, there will be no Japanese teams training in Tucson in 2010 -- but 2011 remains a possibility.

That's the word from a Tucson delegation charged with bringing new blood into Tucson for spring training. The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies are the last two teams training in Tucson, and they'll be out after spring training 2010 when a new Phoenix complex is finished.
