Good news for baseball fans in Tucson: two spring-training games will be played at Kino Stadium, including a March 21 match involving the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers.
The March 21 game is sponsored by the Tucson Padres, Pima County Sports & Tourism Authority and the Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Foundation. The proceeds from the 1:05 p.n. Cubs/Dodgers game benefits the Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Foundation. This is the third year in a row Kino Stadium has hosted a Major League Spring Training charity game involving the Los Angeles Dodgers to raise funds for the Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Foundation.
Also, the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres have each committed to play a Spring Training game at Kino Stadium in March with an announcement planned in the next week finalizing the dates and opponents.
“We want to thank the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres for their continued support of baseball in southern Arizona,” said Mike Feder, General Manager of the Tucson Padres. “We have developed a great friendship with the Green family and it is our pleasure to assist this great cause.”
The Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Foundation was established by the Green family to receive gifts in memory of Christina-Taylor. The mission of the Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Foundation is to honor the life and memory of Christina-Taylor through charitable and educational projects that reflect and embody her interests, values and dreams. She was killed during the Tucson gun attack on U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords that left several dead.
“We are very excited the Cubs agreed to play the Dodgers for this year’s game,” said John Green, father of Christina-Taylor Green and National Crosschecker (scouting department) for the Los Angeles Dodgers. “This game brings everything full circle for me since I played in the Cubs organization and my Dad (Dallas) was their General Manager.”
“As part of our ongoing efforts to bring Major League Spring Training baseball back to Tucson, continuing to have games here each Spring is very important. It serves to keep the community involved with Major League Baseball,” said Dan Schneider, Senior Consultant – MLB, Pima County Sports & Tourism Authority. “Major League Spring Training represented a major economic benefit to Tucson and the tourism industry and it will again.”
