Cubs decide to stay in Mesa -- if voters approve

The Chicago Cubs will continue to train in Mesa if voters approve a referendum on spending on a new $84 million spring facility. The decision wasn't unexpected -- Cubs insiders told us it was a certainty despite a pitch from Florida's Collier County -- but it's not final. Voters and the Arizona Legislature must approve a sales-tax hike that would fund the public part of the development.

People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.
